About NordPheno
Building the Nordic Research Infrastructure Hub for Digital Plant Phenotyping
The Challenge & The Solution
The Nordic region faces unique agricultural challenges due to its distinct climate and light conditions. While advanced research infrastructures (RIs) exist, there remains a critical knowledge gap between plant scientists and computer scientists.
NordPheno addresses this by establishing an interdisciplinary Nordic RI hub. We are connecting plant phenotyping facilities with advanced AI and IoT capabilities to create a unified, data-driven ecosystem for future agriculture.
Our Main Objectives
Building the Nordic Plant Data Hub
We are overcoming Research Infrastructure (RI) fragmentation by creating a federated data system that links institutional RIs across the Nordics.
- FAIR Principles: Ensuring data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable.
- Open Standards: Utilizing open formats like CSV and AgML-compliant JSON-LD.
- Unified Access: Providing a single web interface and RESTful API for seamless data retrieval.
- Trust: Building a secure environment for scientists, breeders, and farmers.
Leveraging IoT and Distributed AI
We are advancing plant phenotyping by integrating cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT) devices with Artificial Intelligence.
- AI Analysis: sophisticated algorithms for image and sensor data analysis.
- Real-time Monitoring: IoT sensors for temperature, light, and moisture.
- Edge Computing: Processing data locally to reduce latency and bandwidth.
- Digital Twins: Creating dynamic models of plant systems (e.g., PhenoRob, Purdue's PhenoRover).
Bridging Interdisciplinary Gaps
We are dedicated to training, networking, and dissemination to foster a new generation of interdisciplinary researchers.
- Education: Intensive courses, workshops, and seminars.
- Mobility: PhD and Postdoc mobility programs to facilitate exchange.
- Knowledge Exchange: Activities designed to familiarize researchers with cross-domain methodologies.
- Community: Strengthening the network between biology and technology experts.
